The Psychology Of Women Class - 1361 Words
Intersectionality was a term I was not familiar with until I enrolled in the Psychology of Women class. Intersectionality was a concept that I had a very difficult time grasping. As comprehension was dawning I would attempt to engage others in conversation on intersectionality and they too did not know what intersectionality was. I quickly realized that intersectionality was an intricate part of oppression, racism, and discrimination. To take a stand against one is to take a stand against all. The textbook Womenââ¬â¢s Lives briefly touches on the subject of intersectionality. However as you complete the assigned readings and watch the videos then you come to see the broader context of intersexuality. The organization Sistah to Sistah a Brooklyn based womenââ¬â¢s organization was founded by women of color. One of the issues addressed by this organization is violence against women of color, however they acknowledge that violence is violence everywhere with one exception the social justice system does not per se address violence against women of color. Yamileth Mejà a (Nicaragua) is fighting the same cause as Sistah to Sistah but in a different country. The list goes on but the viewer comprehends the idea that with some differences such as ethnicity, culture practices etc. we are ultimately fighting the same injustices. The ar ticle Latina and European American Girlsââ¬â¢ Experiences with Academic Sexism and their Self-Concepts in Mathematics and Science during Adolescence is a good example of intersectionality. The article addresses the stereotype that boys are better at math than girlââ¬â¢s myth. The article addresses the stereotype gender threat to girls in direct relationship to math ability which girls of all colors fall victim to however there is one added difference girls of color face an ethnic gender stereotype bias. Social justice is entwined with gender, race, sexuality, marital status, age, class, able-ness etc. We cannot address one without addressing the other.
